The interior alterations for the new UBC Life Sciences Centre NMR Laboratory were completed in 2011. The project involved designing an office research space connected to a separate NMR equipment room. A key role in this type of research oriented project is equipment coordination and in this case, dialogue with the NMR manufacturer Bruker based in Germany was critical to achieving the schedule and meeting the requirements of the equipment prior to the delivery and commencement of the installation. From the onset, the design needed to also address devising an acceptable method for large equipment delivery /removal through the 5 storey building into or from the basement laboratory. The new 4 ton NMR 850MHz magnet delivered from Germany required mechanical and electrical infrastructure rough-in, including a workable quench exhaust design implemented in time for the equipment installation in the fall of 2011. The NMR Lab forms an active role in pioneering research into mechanisms of microbial disease.
