The Pender Residence was designed to respond to a unique and beautiful site, responding to the owner’s desire for a comfortable home within the drama of ocean views and natural setting. The ocean front site overlooks an 80′ bluff with the ocean view predominantly to the east. The layout was designed to optimize southern access to sunlight with an outdoor kitchen and deck wrapping around the east and south exposure. Open areas within the home maximize to the feeling of light throughout the building.

A combination of aesthetics and the need for durability lead to the choice of natural stone veneer and manufactured fibre cement board siding as exterior materials. The natural rough texture of the stone compliments the earthy rustic feeling of the more informal and casual uses occurring in the lower level of the residence and also ties the architecture into the surrounding landscape. The use of stone and fibre cement board horizontal siding also has given the structure an increased feeling of permanence and traditional construction without compromising the modern open layout within the home.
